Costa Mesa United announces new board members
Costa Mesa, Calif. (Feb. 12, 2010) Costa Mesa United, a non-profit organization devoted to supporting youth sports facilities in the community welcomes three new members to its board of directors: Ron Amburgery, Koreen Johnson and Colin McCarthy.
Ron Amburgey is vice president of Amburgey-Carich Construction Inc., a concrete contractor located in Costa Mesa for the past 35 years. His company improved Costa Mesa sports facilities over the years, including installation of scoreboards at the football and baseball fields, and constructing little league fields at Costa Mesa High School and TeWinkle Middle School. He has served on numerous non-profit boards and booster clubs, including Lions Club, Lyons/UCI Eye Bank, Service Organization Council and as a member of Mesa Pride. Ron currently sits on the Youth Employment S ervice (Y.E.S.) board of directors. He has coached teams in Costa Mesa Little League and Costa Mesa Pop Warner, and was a booster club member for Costa Mesa High School.
Koreen Johnson, a long-time Costa Mesa resident, is the Costa Mesa High School cheer coach and adviser, who has been nominated for four consecutive years as California Cheer Coach of the Year (2007-2010). She is a certified cheerleading and gymnastics coach. Koreen was recognized as the 2009 Community Leader of the Year by Leadership Tomorrow. She serves on the Sonora Elementary School PTA board and on the board of AYSO 120. She is the mother of two children who attend Sonora Elementary School; they are involved in a variety of youth sports, including AYSO, CMALL, Costa Mesa Rec. Basketball, gymnastics and Orange Coast College’s summer youth swim program. Koreen graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in speech communications from California State University, Long Beach.
Colin McCarthy, an attorney by profession, currently serves on the Costa Mesa Planning Commission and the city’s Redevelopment and Residential Rehabilitation (3R) Committee. He is also president of the board of directors for the Mesa North Community Association, and is the former treasurer and board director of Orange County HeadStart, Inc. He and his wife Kerry are expecting their first child in July.
Current Costa Mesa United board members are: Gordon Bowley, president; John Ursini, vice-president; Katrina Foley, secretary; Rick Kapko, treasurer; Tom Johnson; Bruce Garlich, James Huffman and Kurt Galitski.

Costa Mesa United was originally established to help build the stadium and pool complex for Costa Mesa and Estancia high schools. Serving the youth sports of Costa Mesa, it is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Its main goal is to build and improve youth sports facilities utilized by Little League, Softball, AYSO Soccer, Pop Warner Football, and other youth sports programs including the Costa Mesa zone schools.
