As we prepare for yet another school year, I just wanted to catch you on some things going on around EHS this summer.

We are holding the Summer Reading Academy at EHS this summer for the third year. The SRA is for students grades four through ten that are two or more grade levels behind in reading. This summer we have over 900 students participating in the four hour a day – four days a week, five week intensive reading program. The hope when we started the program three years ago, was to make sure that we stopped the “Summer Slide.” We wanted to make sure that we did not lose the gains we had made during the school year. For the past two years these students have made up an average, almost one grade level in five weeks during this summer reading program.

We are also in the second year of the Costa Mesa Summer Sports Camp. This year we partnered with the City of Costa Mesa. The City has taken on our coaches as their employees to run these camp and are funding the entire program. This is a partnership that we are very excited about and believe that it is win for everyone involved. These fourth through eighth graders get to participate in a four week summer sports camp with nine different sports (aquatics, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, track, football, cheer, soccer, tennis, and wrestling), run by our EHS and CMHS coaches and players. We have had over 200 kids participate so far.

We are holding our first ever Summer Art and Summer Music Program in partnership with the City as well. The City has been a great partner and we look forward to exploring other ways that we can work with the City of Costa Mesa to benefit the youth of Costa Mesa, they have been great to work with.

At EHS we will be starting our E-Tech High Program in September, with our first cohort group of thirty freshmen students in our new Engineering and Design Academy. These student will be taking the Introduction to Engineering this year, Principles of Engineering in their Sophomore year, and more specialized Engineering classes in their Junior and Senior years. These student will be guaranteed entry into Cal Poly Pomona, UCI, or San Diego State’s Engineering programs upon graduation. Next year will be start the second and third legs to E-Tech High, the Bio-Med Academy and the Animation Academy. We have already formed the Engineering and Design Advisory Board and will be starting Advisory Board’s for Bio-Med and Animation this winter. If you have an interested in being involved let me know.

We have our first piece of data back to see how EHS students are doing academically. Our Advanced Placement results. As you can see we had a huge increase in the percentage of students passing their AP exams with a score of 3 or better (over 20 points!). What is also very encouraging, is that next year we have a huge increase in students enrolled in AP courses (from 330 – 540). We are also in the process of adding two more AP courses (after adding two this year, AP Human Geography and AP Psychology) for the 15-16 school year in conjunction with E-Tech High. EHS is on an upward spiral, with increasing test scores, we are attracting more high end students from our community. J

This year marks EHS’s fiftieth anniversary and we will be sending out details about events for this school year later. We have a fiftieth anniversary committee that is working on it, including a real “homecoming” football game. If you would like to be involved let me know.

Enjoy your summer and as always………………………GO EAGLES!!!
